Gas work is regulated work in Queensland. Only a licence holder may touch it, and this page explains what that means for your job, your price and your paperwork.

From the Meter or Cylinder to the Appliance

Gas work, in the Queensland Government's words, means installing, removing, altering or repairing a gas system, or servicing, testing and certifying one, along with all the pipework and connections. The definition reaches from the fuel source to the last appliance on the run.

Two fuels feed Queensland homes. Natural gas comes through a pipe, and LPG is kept in bottles or a tank on the property. The same rules apply to both.

What sits on the system:

  • the pipework running from the meter or bottles to each appliance
  • the connections at each end of that pipework
  • appliances such as cookers and barbecues, which want a periodic service from a licensed gasfitter and an install to the manufacturer's instructions

A gas plumber Keperra locals can rely on handles all of it, from a single bayonet off the side of a Fitzsimmons Street cottage to a full new run through a brick-veneer home.

What Decides the Price of Gas Work

Four things drive the cost of a gas job: the work type, our access to the pipework, the number of gas points, and any supply check.

Every added point brings extra pipe, extra joints and extra testing time. Access matters too. A run under a raised house goes faster than one chased through a slab, and that difference shows up in the hours.

Before a new system or an extra appliance goes in, the licence holder checks the supply can meet the added demand. For LPG that means the cylinder storage and vaporisation rate. For metered gas it means the meter's capacity, and whether the pipe sizing suits the load.

We don't quote dollar figures on this page, because every job differs. You receive a fixed quote in writing before work begins, and flat-rate pricing keeps hidden fees off the bill.

Plumbers, Gas Fitters and Their Licences

In Queensland, the law lets only a licensed gasfitter touch gas work. Ask to see the person's gas work licence before they start, which is exactly what the Queensland Government advises householders to do.

Many of us hold both tickets. A plumber who carries a gas work licence as well can move between the water and gas sides of a job without dragging in a second tradesperson.

Plumbing and drainage has its own licence pair. The QBCC grants one licence to do the work and a second, a contractor licence, for taking jobs on as a business. The QBCC's online register lets you confirm both, along with any Form 4 lodged for your address.

Choosing a gas fitter Keperra can vet on that register matters more than any ad. The check takes a minute.

Licences in one view:

  • Gas work: a gas work licence held by the person doing the job
  • Plumbing and drainage: one licence to do the work, plus a contractor licence to run it as a business
  • Your check: ask for the licence, then confirm it on the QBCC register

The Gas Compliance Certificate After Installation

A gas system compliance certificate states that a finished gas installation or alteration complies, and the licence holder gives it to the owner immediately on completion.

The certificate attaches to installs and alterations, not to every gas job. A repair on its own doesn't trigger one. When a new system or a change to an existing one wraps up, the paperwork follows.

Two details about the certificate are worth knowing:

  1. You get the original

File it with your property records, because it shows the system's state on completion day.

  2. The network operator gets a copy

When the fuel comes through a distribution network, a copy also goes to that operator within 5 days.

The full certificate story, including plates and the checks that apply when selling or renting, sits on the gas compliance certificates page.

The Gas Jobs We Cover

Keperra Plumbing Services splits gasfitting into four services, each with a page of its own.

Gas leaks. A gas smell wants action first: turn the appliance off, open doors and windows, and don't flick switches. The gas leak repairs page steps through what happens when we arrive and how the repair runs.

Cooktop and appliance installation. New cookers, ovens and heaters need a licensed connection and a certificate at the end, and the gas cooktop installation page has the detail on clearances and connections.

Compliance certificates. The paperwork side of gas work has its own rules and deadlines. See the compliance certificate page for who receives what and when.

Outdoor gas. Bayonets, BBQ points and patio heaters all branch off the same system. The gas bayonet installation page covers the outdoor run, from a Mungarie Street patio to the heater on a deck.

Gas hot water units get a mention here and a full write-up on the hot water plumbing page.

Gasfitting Questions Keperra Customers Ask

Call (07) 3523 7121

What does a gas fitter do at a home?

A gas fitter fits, fixes, services and tests gas systems, from the pipework through to each connection and appliance. Cooktops, heaters and bayonets all sit on that network. When an install or alteration finishes, the licence holder also certifies the work.

How do I check a gas fitter's licence?

Request the gas work licence before the job begins, which is the Queensland Government's own advice. For plumbing work, the QBCC's online register confirms a licence, and a second register shows any Form 4 lodged for the property.

What certificate follows a new gas installation?

You receive the gas system compliance certificate as soon as an installation or alteration is done, and it certifies the finished work complies. The compliance certificate page explains the details.

Who receives the gas compliance certificate?

You do, as the owner. When the fuel comes from a network, the operator gets a copy inside 5 days. Keep the original with your property records.

How much does a gas fitter cost in Keperra?

No single figure fits every job. The price turns on the work type, how easily we can reach the pipes, the count of gas points and any supply check. We put a fixed quote in writing before starting.

Are your gas fitters licensed for gas work in Keperra?

Yes, every gas job goes to a licensed gasfitter, and a licensed plumber handles the water side. Ask for the gas work licence and we'll show it before we begin.
