What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers

Queensland plumbing runs on two licence layers: an occupational licence for the person on the tools, and a contractor licence for the business that contracts the job. Both come from the QBCC. An occupational licence shows the holder has been trained and assessed, while a contractor licence shows the business can meet its financial obligations and run jobs properly.

The classes separate as follows:

  1. Plumber

work on pipes and fixtures at and around the property, except jobs listed for a separate endorsement.

  2. Drainer

the below-ground drainage side, again apart from separately endorsed work.

  3. Gasfitter

gas work, which Queensland reserves for licence holders: installing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying a gas system and its pipework. You can ask to see a gas work licence before any gas job starts.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Two organisations share the oversight: the QBCC administers licences and the notifiable work register and polices unlicensed work, while the local council assesses applications, grants permits and inspects. Regulated work sorts into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and every category requires a licensed plumber or drainer. The QBCC says that requirement protects the home, the owner's health and the owner's rights.

The paperwork to hold afterwards:

  1. A Form 4

after notifiable work, with a copy to you as the owner or whoever engaged the plumber. The QBCC can supply one if it never arrives.

  2. A gas system compliance certificate

after gas work on a new installation or an alteration, handed to you straight away, with the network operator's copy lodged within 5 days.

You can also ask the council to inspect notifiable work at any stage.

How a Plumbing Job Runs From Call to Finish

  1. 1

    Describe the Fault

Phone (07) 3523 7121 or send a message with what you are seeing or finding wet. The more detail you give, the better prepared the plumber arrives.

  2. 2

    Diagnose On Site

The plumber inspects the fixture, pipe or appliance, traces the cause and explains what has failed. Repairs and replacements, from a tap to a full bathroom renovation, all start the same way.

  3. 3

    Quote and Approve

You receive a fixed quote before any work starts, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees, and nothing goes ahead without your go-ahead.

  4. 4

    Test and Hand Over

The plumber tests the finished work and hands over any paperwork, including the Form 4 or gas certificate where the category requires one. Card or EFTPOS payment happens once everything is working.

How do I check a plumber's licence in Queensland?

The QBCC's online registers let you search any plumber by name or number, and the same registers show by address whether a Form 4 has been registered for a property. Run both checks before you hire anyone.

Is every job in Keperra done by a licensed plumber?

Yes, every job is done by a licensed plumber, and gas work goes to licensed gasfitters. Ask for the licence details before work starts, and confirm them on the QBCC registers whenever you like.

What paperwork do I get after plumbing work in Queensland?

Notifiable work brings a copy of the Form 4 the plumber lodges with the QBCC, and you can request one from the QBCC if it never arrives. Gas work brings a gas system compliance certificate handed over on completion.

Which suburbs near Keperra does the team work in?

Our run covers the neighbouring suburbs too, including Ferny Grove, Ferny Hills, Upper Kedron, Mitchelton, Arana Hills and The Gap. Our areas page has the complete list.
